Wedding Lace Shorts! {Shorts on the Line Kickoff 2012}

It’s July which means Shorts on the Line is in full swing! Wow, a few months ago, who would have known that I would shortly become ADDICTED TO SEW-A-LONGS?? Hehe…”shortly.” Excuse the pun.

So anyway, here is my first official Shorts on the Line entry.Β Shorts are the new skirt!

I thought it would be fun to put my summer sewing mantra to the test. Can a pair of shorts truly become special occasion wear?

I went all the way here, people. Lace. Wedding lace! Is there anything more skirt-ish than lace?

I made these out of some scraps that my Grandmother passed on to me in her incredible stash. This was used to make one of my cousin’s wedding dresses, I’m sure. Β I should find out which one and show you pictures of the dress!

To make these shorts, I first cut out a pair from some luxurious white linen I had been saving for a special occasion. Then I cut out a second pair from the lace. Fitting the pattern pieces was tricky because I only had a scrap, but it worked out ok.

Since I wasn’t going to have a hem, I cut about 1 1/2 inches off the bottom of the pattern. I sewed up the two shorts and stuck the linen inside the lace, with the outside of the linen shorts facing in toward Abby’s body. This way, when I folded the elastic waste band out toward the front of the shorts, the finished side would show. Does that make sense?

I think it gives these shorts the perfect finish.

I serged the bottom edge of the linen shorts and added a scalloped piece of wedding lace to the bottom of the lace layer. That way I didn’t have to hem the lace. (By the way, is that even possible??)

I love how these shorts turned out!

For these pictures I paired them with anΒ Opehlia blouseΒ I just made for Abby. More detailed pictures of the blouse are on the way. That’s a post for another day.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the shorts! I love all things LACE these days, so these shorts have truly captured my heart. Sometimes I just stare at them. Ok, too much information! πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading friends! I’d love to hear what you’re sewing. Are you joining up with Shorts on the Line? I heart comments!

    What an amazing idea for shorts – absolutely THE thing! You have a wonderful way of capturing a vision and then making it happen. I hope many women see this and catch the idea for their own daughters.
