The Jess Dress {PR&P 2012, Week 2}

Who’s that girl?

Who’s that girl?
It’s Jess!
Or, in our case: it’s Abby!

It’s week two of Project Run & Play and this weeks theme was to make a children’s look based on your favorite fashion icon’s style. Fun, right?! If you haven’t guessed already I chose… Zooey Deschanel!

Zooey Deschanel is like the girl next door who also happens to have a stellar wardrobe. She’s quirky and eccentric and it all shines through in her style. These qualities bleed into her character, Jess, on the hit show New Girl. Jess is simply adorkable. She cares too much to be cool, which is what I love about her.

And dang: her clothes!

Anyway, here’s a little glimpse of what you’ll typically see Jess wearing on New Girl.

Lot’s of pleated dresses, full skirts, belts, bows, and cardigans. It’s 60’s meets modern: LOVE. By the way, I did some research on her outfits and guess where many of them come from? Anthropologie! No wonder I love them.

Here’s the dress that inspired my look for this week’s sew-along:

Abby’s “Jess Dress” features a tailored bodice with darts and buttons on the front. The skirt is very full with pleats in the front and back.

Abby’s wearing it with hand-made cardigan, of course.

And a little bow belt over pleats. Jess never left home without one.

I couldn’t resist adding a little contrast at the hem. And white flats are just so 60’s.

Fruit snacks, yum.

The blue cardigan and belt were fun to make and I took pictures for a tutorial, so that should make it’s way to you next week.

Abby loves her Jess Dress. It’s very spin-able,

And just like her dress’s name sake, she is simply adorkable.

Thanks for reading friends! I am having so much fun with PR&P. It’s certainly made me a more daring seamstress.

I can’t wait to do more!

Jess Dress details:
Dress Fabric: Stitch Petal by Michael Miller (Mod Basics),
Cardigan: Teal jersey knit, 100% cotton from Fabric.com.

***Trivia alert!*** Did you know that Zooey Deschanel is also the voice behind Disney’s 2011 Winnie the Pooh theme song? With three small kids, you can imagine this is a popular song around here. In fact, I’m listening to it right now: “You test my nerves, it makes me stronger. So, won’t you bother me a little bit longer?” Love it a million times a million.

One more thing before I go: Please don’t take this post to mean that I necessarily recommend watching New Girl. It’s hilarious and quirky and Zooey Deschanel is a lot of fun. However, the show can get a bit raunchy, so beware. I’ve had to skip some episodes that blow past my personal boundaries. Just FYI!

I love all the Zooey interpretations! They’ve been fabulous, because you are right, she’s so stylish! And I feel the same way about New Girl. I wish over and over that it wasn’t so raunchy because her character is amazing and the show would be even more amazing if it weren’t. I honestly can’t watch it now, soooo sad!

Oh I saw this in the flickr group last week and I meant to come tell you how much I adore it!! So perfectly Jess. I love the New Girl. That kelly green dress with bright blue cardi actually inspired my color scheme for my skirting the issue skirt this summer. (And Kristin? Why don’t you watch New Girl? Lame.)
