Clearly, we are the most calm and collected family on the planet. Clearly, the kids know how to pose for pictures because they’ve had lots of practice. They know how to sit still and smile at the camera.
Clearly, we never make faces, never scowl, never say “no!” to Mom and Dad. We never announce “POOP” loudly in a restaurant and never tell visiting family members that, “I just ate a booger!”
Mom never rolls her eyes and says “sheesh,” and Dad never takes a deep breath and goes out to the garage to stare at his road bike wistfully. There is never any drama, never any spilled drinks, never any potty accidents, and we all go to bed quietly every night.
Happily, thankfully, we are far more exciting than what you just read. We are like the definition of a star:
“A self-luminous celestial body consisting of a mass of gas held together by its own gravity.” Source.
We are a bright combination of different personalities, all with the same capability for explosion, that are held together by LOVE. Sticking together, we are brighter. Sticking together, we are a family.
But, boy oh boy, do we cause explosions sometimes. I love these kiddos, I love our life together, but don’t for a moment believe that things are all sewing and swimming and posed pictures over here. We are living LIFE and life is one big, beautiful, messy gift.
My kids do crazy things. They NEVER sit still for family pictures, and I mean NEVER. This is as good as it gets, people, and one kid is not even looking at the camera. BUT ITS REAL.
The picture below is real, too. So, so real.
I love them and their silly hearts. They are children, all awash in the adventure of the world, and we are grown ups trying to set ourselves in perfect molds. May they give us the courage to see the world as a place full of joy, possibility, and adventure.
Thanks for joining me for a little peek into our daily lives. Please tell me: I’m not the only one who’s kids REFUSE to take a decent family picture, am I? I mean, we only got ONE picture with Hudson smiling:
And after looking at it again, it’s not even a smile. It’s a grimace. I’m probably ruining my children’s lives with these family photo shoots, aren’t I? Oh well, I’m sure it builds character somehow.
I hope you’re living a truly REAL life today and loving it! What’s been on your menu so far? Exploding diapers? Deadlines at work? A kid with a lot of questions? Never ending laundry? I know how it is sister, and we’re in it together. Just keep loving and you’ll make it through. It’s not perfect, but NotPerfect is beautiful. And unforgettable.
